Meg Burt

Meg Burt has been a member of Lilac City Toastmasters for about two years. She is shown here with her husband of fifteen years Gene and their two children Kevin, 9 and Katie, 10. The family has resided in Webster, N.Y. for fifteen years.

Meg has worked for Recycled Paper Greetings for seven years. This environmentally friendly firm makes greeting cards from 100% recycled paper. She describes this company as the Ben and Jerry's of the greeting card business i.e. a little offbeat. Meg was recently promoted to the position of Business Development manager. In this new responsibility she is involved in both developing new business and managing existing businesses in upstate New York and New England. She had to work hard to reach the level she has today and part of that work entailed understanding both her strong points and those that needed improvement.

In early 1998 Meg had just finished giving a sales presentation to one of Rochester's major firms and although successful felt in the back of her mind that she could have done better. Her company also recognized the need for all their employees to concentrate on their personal development as a means of improving job performance. Some months before, she had cut out an article in the newspaper about Lilac City Toastmasters. Now as she reread it she decided it was time to act on her inclinations and called the club. Meg liked what she saw as a visitor and joined after two meetings. She, like all new members, was assigned another member as a mentor. Art Drummond used his great skills as a Toastmaster of many decades to start her down the path that would help her reach her goals.

Meg has been an outstanding addition to our club with her speaking and evaluation skills but more than that she has brightened our meetings with her sparkling personality. She has also brought her husband and children as guests to some of our meetings. On one occasion her vice-president from Recycled Paper Greetings attended as a guest.

Despite her heavy workload she finds time to enjoy the outdoors. She loves walking especially along an ocean beach and playing golf with her husband. In fact, her husband Gene is in the golf business selling equipment to pro-shops. He was involved in the 1995 Ryder Cup here in Rochester. Meg is also an avid reader and loves wandering along the bookshelves at her local library or bookstore.

Meg Burt has become a valued addition to Lilac City Toastmasters and we hope she will honor us with her presence for many years to come.
