Why join Lilac City Toastmasters?
Lilac City...50 Plus Years of Communication
Sometimes in solving a single problem, we can affect the course of future generations. For example, when
Ralph Smedley formed the first Toastmasters Club in the early 1900's, he was merely attempting to solve a
problem. Aware that good communication skills are necessary for success in life, Dr. Smedley had noticed that
the young men under his direction at the YMCA lacked these skills. Consequently, he began a club in response
to their need. He probably never imagined, however, the far-reaching results this action would eventually
bring to the world! Although Ralph Smedley is no longer with us, the good work he started lives on today in
Toastmasters Clubs throughout the world.
Lilac City Toastmasters Club in particular exemplifies this spirit of helpfulness, which motivated the
formation of that first Toastmasters Club. While actively promoting the Toastmaster message (better listening,
better thinking, better speaking) the members of Lilac City encourage one another toward these goals in a
friendly, supportive setting.
Having been involved with improving communication in the Rochester Area for over 50 years, Lilac City
Toastmasters Club enjoys the benefits and guidance that comes from experience. Officers faithfully attend
semi-annual training sessions to learn new ideas and receive inspiration in carrying out their roles. Some
members of Lilac City Toastmasters have even served in District leadership positions. Lilac City often
participates in and has won awards at Area, Division and District speech contests.
Recognizing that having interesting meetings is important, Lilac City has each meeting centered around a
theme. This provides a focal point, but also encourages variety, keeping meetings lively. Well-organized
meetings are conducted in a relaxed educational environment. During a short dessert break, club members and
guests have a chance to chat, to browse through educational materials, and an opportunity to ask individual
questions.
Since many people feel more comfortable asking questions of someone they know, Lilac City does offer
mentors to its members. In the past, Lilac City Toastmasters had informal mentoring of its members. Older,
experienced members would informally coach new members who asked for help with their first few speeches.
Sometimes new members would be shy about asking for help, however, and would lose interest. So to ensure
that each new member receives attention, The Lilac City Toastmasters Club has recently instituted a formal
mentoring program. Each new member is now assigned a mentor who will provide help, answer questions, and
try to make the Toastmaster experience enjoyable by taking a personal interest in his mentee's progress.
Taking good care of new Toastmasters has become critical to The Lilac City Club because it has grown
considerably with new members over the past two years. Each additional member brings new talents, diversity,
and is important to the group. In getting to know fellow members at meetings, working on projects together,
and during social activities scheduled throughout the year, many friendships have the opportunity to
flourish.
Lilac City Toastmasters would be happy to have you attend one of our meetings as a guest. Join us and
witness the second oldest Toastmasters Club in the Rochester Area as we continue in the spirit of Dr.
Smedley and build confidence through better communication.
